When I started to be vegetarian (and later vegan), I had quite a hard time to prepare tofu in a way, it is exciting and delicious. I don’t know why, but it never worked out. Meanwhile, I tried a lot of recipes and cooked with Tofu in very different ways. Whether scrambled, fried or blended – now I love Tofu! So in case, you also have a hard time with Tofu or you already love it as me, try this recipe and I am sure you will like it!

For fried Tofu, it’s always good to use firm tofu, so it is not falling apart while preparing it. As the natural tofu tastes like nothing, a good marinade and seasonings are everything! But no reason to get nervous. You don’t need much to spice up your tofu and give it the right flavor. This recipe is a great example, how exciting tofu can be. Marinated in a spicy mixture and coated in a crunchy sesame dough – can it get better?

Crispy Sesame Tofu with Carrot Cucumber Salad

Ingredients

  • 200 g Tofu

Tofu Marinade:

  • 3 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Sambal Oelek
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder

  Tofu Coating:

  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sesame
  • 3 tbsp breadcrumbs

  Cucumber Carrot Salad:

  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 bundle fresh coriander
  • 60 ml Rice Vinegar
  • 2 tbsp Lime Juice
  • 2 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar

Instructions

  1. First, squeeze out the liquid from the tofu (this works best when you wrap the tofu in a paper towel and squeeze). Then cut tofu into slices.
  2. For the marinade, mix the soy sauce, Sambal Oelek and Garlic Powder. Put Tofu into a bowl and mix with marinade. Let Tofu marinate for at least 2 hours (or overnight).
  3. Prepare the coating by prepare one plate with flour, one plate with a mixture of water and starch and one plate with a mixture of sesame and breadcrumbs.
  4. Dust Tofu in flour, then cover in sticky starch mixture and at the end put breadcrumbs and sesame around each piece of Tofu.
  5. Fry Tofu in Pan until golden brown. Afterward, put crispy tofu pieces on a paper towel so it can drain. Put every piece separately, so it won’t stick together and stays crispy.
  6. Cut cucumber and carrots in small slices.
  7. Mince the coriander and garlic and mix both with rice vinegar, lime juice, soy sauce and brown sugar.
  8. Mix carrots and cucumber with dressing in a bowl.
  9. Arrange the salad with crispy tofu pieces on a plate and enjoy.
